Hiring the right wedding DJ in Hawaiʻi is about much more than finding someone who can play good music and show up on time. Your DJ controls the energy, pacing, announcements, transitions, and overall flow of your day- from your guests' arrival before your ceremony through the very last dance. Below are 47 essential questions couples should ask before booking their Hawai'i wedding DJ, whether me or someone else.

Experience & Professionalism

1. How many weddings have you DJed in Hawaiʻi?

Experience matters, especially in Hawaii where venues range from luxury resorts to remote beaches and private estates. I've personally been part of over 400 weddings since I started my company while studying at UH Manoa in 2014.

2. Have you worked at our venue before?

A DJ familiar with your venue already understands the acoustics, layout, loading zones, power access, and venue rules. That can make your wedding day run far more smoothly. I've DJed at almost all of the wedding venues on Oahu and Kona, plus several on Kaua'i and Maui.

3. Will you personally DJ our wedding?

Larger DJ companies have several DJs and MCs on their list, so you may get a different one than the one you originally meet. I am always the DJ & MC at all of my weddings!

4. Can we watch you perform at a real wedding or event?

Seeing a DJ in action reveals far more than social media clips- you can observe crowd interaction, mixing ability, professionalism, and how they manage the flow of the evening. I personally do not allow outside guests at my weddings (would you want strangers at your wedding?!), but I don't mind sharing longer recordings of my weddings.

5. Can you provide recent reviews or references?

Reviews help reveal consistency, professionalism, communication style, and whether previous couples felt the DJ delivered on expectations. You can check out my glowing 5 star reviews from the past decade on The Knot, Wedding Wire, Yelp, Google, Zola, and Thumbtack.

6. What makes your DJ & MC style unique?

Every DJ approaches weddings differently, and you want to make sure you vibe with your DJ on the initial meeting/call. As an MC I like to be fun, professional, relaxed, and present throughout the day. As a DJ I like to make my own mashups live to keep guests on their toes!

7. How do you handle wedding timelines and coordination?

A professional wedding DJ often acts as the “quarterback” of the reception. I coordinate with the planner, photo/video team, and caterer to keep the evening on track (and make sure there is enough time to party at the end of the night!).

8. Do you carry liability insurance?

Many Hawai'i venues require vendors to carry at least $1 Million general liability insurance. Asking this early avoids last minute surprises. I carry $2 Million (per occurrence) insurance which also covers my clients.

Music & DJ Style

9. What is your mixing style?

Many DJs blend songs seamlessly nightclub or festival style, while some play full songs with simple fades. I like to play with all kinds of transitions between genres and BPMs. I base my mix off my clients' favorite songs- if a track is hitting, I'll let it play out longer before my transition. If a track isn't as hot, I'll mix out a bit quicker.

10. What genres do you specialize in?

Many DJs say they can 'mix anything', but in reality most DJs specialize in one or a few genres/styles. I'm most comfortable with open format hits & remixes, EDM & House, Hip Hop, and Reggaeton, but with advance notice I can prepare for anything.

11. Can we create a must-play list?

Couples typically have their own playlists and favorite songs- a great DJ welcomes this input while still reading the room. I use an app called Planning Beats where you can link your existing playlists to each part of the day (pre-ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, open dance, etc.) as well as specific songs for your first dance and other special moments.

12. Can we create a do-not-play list?

Your DJ should give you this option if there are any popular songs that you'd rather not hear on your wedding day! I have a section in the Planning Beats app for this, you can add genres, artists, or specific songs so I steer clear.

13. Do you take guest song requests?

Some couples love guest requests, while others prefer a fully curated soundtrack. I like to take guest requests if they match the current vibe, or I know they would hit. Let me know in the Planning Beats app if you'd like to allow guest requests (or tell me to watch out for Uncle Joe requesting Freebird nonstop!).

14. How do you read the crowd and adjust music?

An experienced DJ watches energy levels, age groups, and reactions in real time to keep the dance floor active throughout the night. I keep an eye on guests' reactions to music throughout the day, so that by the time the dance floor opens guests are ready to party.

15. What songs consistently pack the dance floor?

Every crowd is different- what rocks the party one weekend could clear the dance floor the next. In my experience, the songs that keep the couple on the dance floor keep their guests there too!

16. How do you handle shy or quiet crowds?

Not every group of humans is huge on dancing. For those, I'll warm up with a couple slow songs, plus some hits throughout the years to warm up the crowd. Some couples just want to jam to great music while drinking and catching up with their friends and family.

17. Can you accommodate cultural or ethnic music traditions?

Many Hawaii weddings blend multiple cultures and traditions- your DJ should be comfortable incorporating cultural traditions, or should be willing to learn in advance. I have been fortunate to be part of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Mexican, Spanish, Peruvian, Polish, Croatian, Haitian, Jamaican, Indian, Egyptian, and Australian weddings.

18. How involved are you on the microphone?

Some DJs are energetic emcees while others keep announcements minimal and elegant. The large DJ companies on island charge extra for an MC, otherwise the DJ is completely silent. As a default I am on the mic for important announcements and introductions throughout the day, as well as hyping the party a bit when the dance floor opens. I can be more or less interactive depending on the client's wishes.

Planning & Personalization

19. How do you customize weddings for each couple?

No couple wants their wedding to feel generic. I customize the music for every wedding where I'm involved. As an MC, I remain present in the moment and never use written scripts.

20. Do you help couples build timelines?

Many experienced wedding DJs assist with structuring the reception flow, including entrances, toasts, dances, cake cutting, and open dancing. I use an app called Planning Beats to organize my music and timelines for all of my weddings. You can use my sample timeline and easily add/remove moments, select music, and leave MC notes for me.

21. When do we finalize music selections?

Knowing deadlines helps couples stay organized during planning. I try to finalize the timeline and music selections no later than 2 weeks prior to the wedding.

22. Can you help us choose music for special moments?

A knowledgeable DJ can guide couples through selections for the processional, recessional, first dance, parent dances, and grand entrance. I have many sample playlists for all of these moments on the Planning Beats app, and I can recommend songs based on the other music playlists you send me.

23. How do you pronounce difficult names correctly?

Having a unique last name myself, I know the frustration of hearing someone say your last name wrong! Any uncommon names I will write out phonetically to be sure there are no mistakes on the big day.

24. Can we submit playlists digitally?

Most modern, professional DJs have transitioned to online planning portals to simplify music selection and event coordination. I use the Planning Beats app for everything, and go over the final details in a call with the couple.

25. Will you coordinate directly with our planner and venue?

Strong communication between vendors creates a smoother wedding day experience. I know and have worked with most of the venues and wedding planners on O'ahu and Kona, and we keep each other in the loop at each stage in the planning process.

26. How do you handle schedule delays?

Weddings rarely run perfectly on time. I always check in with the couple and planner if there are any deviations from the planned timeline- sometimes a couple would like another 15 minutes to make the rounds or do a wardrobe change. I'm very flexible!

27. Can you edit songs for clean versions or custom cuts?

Usually there is a publicly available "radio edit" version of a song. If not I can create one using STEMS to separate the vocals from the track. I can also make custom edits of multiple songs for a first dance (no charge for simple edits).

Equipment, Sound & Lighting

28. What sound equipment do you use?

Professional-grade sound systems create a cleaner, more consistent audio experience for ceremonies and receptions. I use Italian made RCF speakers for my main setup on top of linen-covered stands which look and sound very clean.

29. Do you bring backup equipment?

Equipment failures when using pro-level gear are rare, but possible. I have at least two layers of backup for every component in my sound system.

30. Can you provide ceremony audio?

Outdoor weddings in Hawai'i often take place gorgeous settings with no access to electricity. I offer a fully battery powered, wireless ceremony sound system which includes two wireless lapel or handheld mics, one to two 10" speakers (depending on number of guests) and inputs for up to two live musicians. With a separate ceremony sound system from the reception, there is zero music downtime.

31. Do you provide cocktail hour music in a separate location?

Large venues require multiple sound systems if the reception, cocktail hour, and ceremony will be in different areas. I can add additional sound systems (connected to the main system) to ensure even coverage as needed.

32. What lighting options do you offer?

Lighting can dramatically affect the atmosphere of your reception, from elegant uplighting to energetic dance floor effects. I include dance lights in all of my packages, and have wireless uplights available as an additional service. I wirelessly sync all lights to the music using AI.

33. How much setup space do you need?

This helps couples coordinate floor plans and venue logistics. Most of my events I need about a 10'x10' square for my table and speakers, but I can squeeze into smaller spaces if needed. I like to be set up right next to the dance floor for best sound and lighting quality.

34. Do you provide wireless microphones for speeches?

Reliable microphones are essential for vows, toasts, and announcements. All of my reception packages include two handheld wireless mics with a 300' range (more mics available). I offer a choice between lapel and handheld wireless mics for ceremonies.

35. How do you handle outdoor weddings in Hawaiʻi?

Island weddings often involve wind, humidity, heat, sand, and occasional rain (especially in the winter wet season). If the wedding will be "open air", the DJ will still need to be covered. I have a white 10'x10' pop up tent to protect my equipment if the client does not have one.

36. Do you perform a soundcheck before guests arrive?

A thorough soundcheck helps prevent technical problems during key moments. I always sound check 1 hour prior to guest arrival, and again 10 minutes prior.

Pricing, Contracts & Logistics

37. What is included in your wedding package?

Clarify exactly what services, hours, equipment, and enhancements are included in the quoted price. I have several packages and like to include everything the couple needs- check out my services tab for more info.

38. Are there travel fees for neighbor islands?

Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island of Hawai'i have many beautiful spots to tie the knot, but the selection of DJs on those islands is more limited than O'ahu. I offer my services to the neighbor islands for a small travel charge and PA rental charge. Aside from the speakers and stands, I'm able to safely bring the rest of my equipment over on the plane.

39. Do you include an MC?

The large DJ companies on island will charge extra for an MC, otherwise the DJ will make zero announcements. I always include myself as MC in all of my wedding packages.

40. What are your overtime rates?

If the party runs late, you should know the costs ahead of time. I include up to 6 hours of music and DJ & MC service for my reception package, plus an additional hour (up to 7 total) if the ceremony package is booked. If a party goes beyond that, I'm usually available at $200 per hour.

41. Is setup and breakdown included?

Some DJs charge separately for setup time while others include it in their packages. I always include transportation, setup, and strike in all of my packages.

42. What deposit is required to reserve our date?

Professional wedding vendors require a retainer to secure availability. I take a $500 retainer to officially reserve that day for you along with a signed contract.

43. When is final payment due?

Knowing payment deadlines helps couples manage wedding budgets more effectively. I try to finalize payment, music selections, and the timeline by 30 days prior.

44. What is your cancellation or postponement policy?

Unexpected changes can happen. The $500 retainer is generally non-refundable since it is to officially reserve that date, but I will work to reschedule if possible. I've never before canceled on a wedding.

45. Do you require vendor meals for your team?

The DJ along with your other wedding vendors like photographer, videographer, and coordinator are all working many hours to make everything come together. While it's certainly not required, a meal is very much appreciated!

Day-Of Performance & Guest Experience

46. How do you keep the energy flowing throughout the night?

The best wedding DJs understand pacing. I like to think of my set like a roller coaster- build, drop, larger build, larger drop. I build a bit during cocktail hour, dial back the energy a bit when dinner starts, start building again so that by the end of dinner the guests are ready to get the party started. I'll throw in an occasional curve ball in my dance set to keep the guests on their toes too.

47. What do you believe makes a wedding unforgettable?

This question often reveals a DJ’s philosophy, personality, and passion for weddings. My favorite thing is seeing families and friends come together on the dance floor celebrating love together both old and new.
